It is extremely important for a baseball player to condition properly for his or her sport. The throwing motion puts a tremendous amount of stress on the shoulder and elbow that over time, can lead to serious injuries. It is imperative for a thrower to have a strong, muscularly balanced shoulder and believe it or not physically powerful core and leg musculature. Weak legs and core muscles put more stress on the shoulder during throwing. With added stress, the shoulder and even the elbow can break down at an early age. I’ve seen it happen over and over. Careers are ended not because of the injury itself but because of the lack of preparation on the behalf of the player. When I rehabilitate throwers and pitchers I emphasize the importance of proper lower extremity and core conditioning along with throwing specific strengthening and stabilization exercises of the rotator cuff and scapular musculature. Of course, let’s not forget the importance of proper throwing mechanics. Greg Modica’s expertise in those proper throwing mechanics and the advanced, baseball specific training methods that the operators of ProMet Physical Therapy bring to the table, make the Complete Baseball Conditioning Program live up to its name as the most thorough around.
